What is allergy immunotherapy?

Immunotherapy targets the cause of allergy and changes the natural course of disease

Understanding allergic disease

Hypersensitivity reactions can be divided into different groups based on the underlying mechanism. Type 1 hypersensitivity is the IgE-mediated allergic reaction seen in respiratory allergic disease. In this type of reaction IgE antibodies bind to soluble allergen molecules leading to mast cell activation and the release of mediators, such as histamine, directly causing the allergic symptoms.
Other types of hypersensitivity involve complement activation, tissue damage induced by immune complexes or T cell mediated inflammation or cytotoxicity, but even though some of these are often termed allergy they are not mediated by allergen specific IgE antibodies.
